Look back on 225 years of faith, community, and service at Our St. John’s Lutheran Church!
The Early Years – 1790s: Beginnings of St. John’s
The story of St. John’s Lutheran Church began in the late 1700s with Christian settlers in the Yough Glades area. In 1790, John Stauch was chosen as a "layreader" to conduct worship services, using a sermon book sent by the Hagerstown fathers. Stauch’s leadership extended to nearby colonies, and he is credited with baptizing 323 individuals and helping to organize the Joint Synod of Ohio.
Sussan’s Church – 1820
In 1820, George Reinhart deeded land to the German Lutheran and Dutch Reformed congregations, leading to the construction of Sussan’s Church. Located in an oak grove near the old state road, it became the first dedicated church building in the region, named in honor of Susannah Wiles, Reinhart’s wife.
Present Church Built – 1907
In 1907, the current St. John’s church was constructed at the intersection of Routes 50 and 219. The congregation worked together to dig the foundation, haul materials, and construct the church, with much of the labor provided freely by members. The cornerstone was laid in July 1907, and the church building was completed and dedicated shortly after.
Improvements at St. John’s – 1928
In 1928, the interior of St. John’s was redecorated by DuBrau Art Studio, and a new piano was purchased. The painting of "The Good Shepherd" above the altar was completed during this time. The improvements were made possible through loans from church members, demonstrating the continued support and dedication to the church’s growth.
First Meeting Place – Early 1800s
George Reinhart and his family, who settled near Red House in 1788, built a structure known as Reinhart’s Tavern. This building served as a residence, tavern, and gathering place for political meetings and church services. It laid the foundation for future church gatherings in the area.
The Civil War Era – 1861-1865
During the Civil War, St. John’s church family experienced hardship and turmoil, with both Union and Confederate soldiers stationed in the area. Despite this, Rev. Jesse Winecoff served as pastor, guiding the congregation through one of the darkest times in American history. Stories of resilience, such as local farmers protecting their livestock, highlight the community's spirit.
Parsonage Built – 1921
In 1921, a new parsonage was built adjacent to the church, following the sale of the previous parsonage in Eglon, WV. With the help of many dedicated church members, the parsonage was completed for $6,000, including $1,200 in free labor. The dedication service was held on June 19, 1922, with several Lutheran pastors attending.
Looking Forward – Continuing the Legacy
Today, St. John’s Lutheran Church stands as a testament to 225 years of faith, community, and service. From its humble beginnings as a layreader-led gathering to its current role as a central part of the Red House community, the church continues to be a place of worship, fellowship, and outreach.
